Where do I begin ?
Counselling is a journey of self-discovery through an internal landscape that may have become chaotic and confusing due to the stress and anxiety experienced as life unfolds. Lingering childhood issues, bereavement, illness, relationship problems and work frustrations are all life situations that can cause turbulence in our personal sea of life, making our solitary journey seem frightening and dangerous. The counsellor is the guide and you are the intrepid explorer. The trek will call for bravery and a willingness to ‘go there’. To visit the places in your mind which may have seemed too frightening to ‘go to’ before.
What can I get out of it ?
Personal insight, heightened self-esteem and freedom could be your reward.
I try to bury my feelings but it's all too much
We may want to deny it, stiff upper lip and all that, but today’s new awareness does not allow us to turn a blind eye to the corrosive effects of excessive stress and anxiety. At this point in time, I think we can all agree that interrupted sleep patterns, anger/aggression, relationship problems, respiratory ailments, eating disorders, drug and /or alcohol abuse...even cancer may result from distress caused by unresolved issues.
It is important not to keep painful feelings hidden. By talking and expressing ones emotions in a confidential setting, together with the counsellor, you can work towards learning to understand the confusing, often fearful feelings inside. Hopefully allowing you to begin to create a new way of life. A life full of meaning, contentment and peace of mind...our true birth right!
It's hard to talk about myself
An initial aim of counselling is to create a safe environment, based on confidentiality, trust and mutual respect where you as the client can explore issues and experiment with new ways of thinking that may have seemed unsafe to do...even alone at home.
